Slide King

Jerry Douglas over de Slide King lapsteel:

"I love my Slide King lap steel from Fern's Guitars. It has a big fat sound coming from that chunk of zebra wood and a great sounding P90 from Jason Lollar. Great craftmanship! A wonderful addition to my arsenal."

(Jerry Douglas is a leading USA 12 times Grammy Awards winning dobro player who performes, records solo albums, works as a producer and played on an innumerable amount of recordings.  www.jerrydouglas.com )

Solid zebrawood

Because the Slide king has a much smaller body compared to a regular guitar, it is no problem to use heavy wood types. Zebra wood is a beautiful African wood with a typical striped pattern. The lapsteel gets a long sustain, clear mids and better harmonics.

Lollar P90

A perfect matching pickup for this lap steel guitar. The Lollar P90 has a warm character with no mud, enough clearity and stays articulated even with overdrive. You hear what you play.

Original details

Inlays and small parts are all made in the workshop in Amsterdam by hand or with small machines. This makes every lap steel unique and easy to adjust to your personal wishes.

How is a Slide King lap steel made?

1.  Zebrawood body

The body of the Slide King is made from 1 or 2 pieces of zebra wood. The lapsteel is machined to the right thickness and shape. Cavities for pickup and electronics are cut with a router.

2.  Ebony binding

Around the body and head of the Slide King an ebony binding is glued. The binding is bend by steam and a hot pipe, just like the sides of an acoustic guitar

3.  Ebony parts

Most parts of the Slide King are made from solid ebony. Fretboard, bridge, electronic covers. The eight string version has also a pickup cover made from ebony. It makes a beautiful contrast with the zebra wood.

4.  Small details

Details in the fretboard and head are cut by hand. Small pieces of zebra wood are inlayed in the ebony wood. The fretboard has maple markers and a rosewood binding, like the body.

6.  Surface finish

The Slide King is sanded to a very fine course and even polished. The wood gets a nice shine and feels comfortable.

7.  Oil finish

The complete lap steel is impregnated with a blend of natural oils. The brand is Auro. The oil protects the wood and gives the wood a very nice contrast. After a week of impregnating the wood and drying, the instrument is finished with a natural wax layer.
